the heart of bell's garden

mission

mission

bell’s garden cultivates spaces of growth, awareness, and transformation for Black girls and women navigating suburban and predominantly white spaces. Through intrapersonal development, community-building, and advocacy, we plant the seeds of self-discovery, confidence, and leadership while fostering external conversations that challenge existing systems. Our work empowers individuals and institutions to cultivate environments where Black girlhood and womanhood are honored, supported, and deeply rooted in belonging.

vision

We envision a world where Black girls and women in suburban spaces are affirmed, centered, and thriving. A future where schools, workplaces, and communities actively nourish environments that recognize the unique experiences of Black girlhood and womanhood—allowing them to grow freely and flourish without barriers. Through intentional cultivation of awareness, dialogue, and systemic transformation, we aim to plant lasting change that will blossom for generations to come.

history

the roots of bell's garden

bell’s garden was founded in the summer of 2024 by Dr. Mallory D. McCoy, Aisha Williams, and Chardanee Harvey, with a shared vision to empower Black girls and women in suburban spaces. Officially established as a for-profit LLC on July 10, 2024, the garden began its journey of planting seeds of growth and resilience. While Chardanee branched off to focus on her new career as a first-year teacher, her contributions remain deeply rooted in the foundation of bell’s garden. Today, Dr. Mal and Aisha continue to nurture this vision, expanding their work and planting seeds of change in school districts nationwide. Together, they honor the foundation’s legacy while cultivating a thriving future for the garden. 🌱

growing through challenges

Challenges

  1. Isolation & Marginalization – Black girls and women in suburban spaces often navigate environments where they are underrepresented, misunderstood, or overlooked, leading to feelings of isolation and exclusion.

  2. Lack of Institutional Awareness & Commitment – Schools, workplaces, and organizations may lack the awareness, resources, or willingness to create truly inclusive environments.

  3. Systemic Barriers – From education to professional advancement, Black girls and women face structural inequities that limit access, voice, and leadership opportunities.

  4. Cultural Competency Gaps – Many educators, leaders, and institutions lack the training and understanding to support the nuanced needs of Black girls and women in predominantly white spaces.

  5. Resistance to Change – Efforts to center Black girlhood and womanhood are often met with pushback, minimizing the urgency of our work and the need for systemic transformation.

Opportunities

  1. Expanding Awareness & Conversations – As more institutions recognize the need for equity and inclusion, bell’s garden can continue to nurture dialogues that shift mindsets and policies.

  2. Deepening Community & Partnerships – Strengthening relationships with schools, districts, and organizations allows us to grow our impact and expand programming.

  3. Developing Leadership & Advocacy Pathways – Creating more opportunities for Black girls and women to engage in self-advocacy, leadership, and professional development strengthens our long-term impact.

  4. Scaling Our Work – By refining and expanding our workshops, consulting services, and learning experiences, we can plant the seeds for broader systemic transformation.

  5. Shaping Future Generations – Investing in intrapersonal development fosters lifelong confidence and resilience in Black girls and women, ensuring that our work continues to blossom long after a single workshop or training session.

At bell’s garden, we recognize that transformation is a continuous process—one that requires intentional cultivation, nurturing, and care. By addressing these challenges and leveraging opportunities, we are building a foundation where Black girls and women can plant deep roots, rise with strength, and thrive unapologetically. 🌸
